Irene Byrne

Senior Physiotherapist with the National Heart and Lung Transplant and VAD team in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin Ireland. With over 40 years of experience in respiratory physiotherapy, managing patients at all levels of respiratory and cardiac compromise to deliver patient focused care at pre and post heart and lung transplantation and at end stage disease .
Has presented at numerous international conferences including the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation , ERS, BTS and INN – ILD .
An enthusiastic advocate of rehabilitation, the maintenance of mobility and conditioning at every stage of cardiac and respiratory disease , with a particular interest in Interstitial Lung Disease
As a strong believer in empowering patients and their carers towards self care with support and information has worked closely with the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association – ILFA developing the “2000 Steps Challenge”, a programme aimed at patients with ILD more recently with ILFA recording a video of exercise and symptom management information for patients with ILD.
